Rod Carew

Rod Carew won seven American League batting titles and collected 3,053 career hits over a 19-year career with the Minnesota Twins and California Angels, earning AL MVP honors in 1977 and induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. He remains regarded as one of the purest hitters the game has produced.

Carew's philanthropic legacy is deeply personal. In 1996, his 18-year-old daughter, Michelle, died after a seven-month battle with leukemia; the family's public plea for bone marrow donors generated more than 70,000 calls to the National Marrow Donor Program and raised national awareness of the need for donor registration. In her memory, Carew established the Michelle Carew Leukemia Fund through the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. Two decades later, Carew survived a near-fatal heart attack and received a heart transplant in 2016, after which he became a prominent advocate for organ donation and heart health awareness.

Westcoast Sports Associates presented Rod Carew with the Roy Firestone Award in 2019, honoring a Hall of Fame career and a family legacy of turning profound personal loss into advocacy that has helped save other families' lives.
