John Wooden

Known as “The Wizard of Westwood,” John Wooden built the most dominant dynasty in college basketball history as head coach at UCLA, winning 10 NCAA championships in a 12-year span, including seven in a row — a record that remains unmatched in Division I basketball. His coaching philosophy, distilled into his famous “Pyramid of Success,” emphasized character and preparation as much as athletic skill, and it continues to be taught in leadership programs well beyond sports.

Wooden's legacy of giving back is formalized today through the John R. Wooden Award Foundation and the Wooden Athletic Fund, which support academic and athletic opportunities for student-athletes and have sent more than 1,000 underprivileged children to college basketball camps in his name. Throughout his life, Wooden was equally known for mentoring generations of players and coaches on values of discipline, humility, and service.

John Wooden passed away in June 2010 at age 99. Westcoast Sports Associates honored him with the Roy Firestone Award in 1998, recognizing a coaching legend whose impact on young people reached well beyond the basketball court.
