View Park Prep Charter School Leadership Camp Founded in 2001, the View Park Preparatory Accelerated Charter Middle School prepares its students to attend and to compete at the top 100 colleges and universities in the nation. Students predominantly come from low-income neighborhoods. View Park Prep is rooted in academic achievement, but also believes strongly in the values taught by sports. While achieving academically, View Park Prep is challenged to offer athletic programs because of the financial challenges of meeting their primary academic mission. WSA provided funding in 2006 and 2007 to View Park Prep to support a sports and leadership camp for 200 students (boys and girls). The camp offered a series of basketball clinics, 3-on-3 tournaments, and leadership and character development seminars. With the support of WSA, View Park Prep was able to offer this unique summer program. The students who participated not only improved their basketball skills, but also learned critical leadership skills. Opportunities like this are invaluable for children who come from predominantly low-income households. They are all at-risk kids, living in a community infested with gang activity and crime. View Park Prep's goal, with the support of WSA, is to lower the risks and, instead, increase the likelihood that they will be productive, energetic leaders in school and beyond.
